Money. We all need it to live. We all have ideas about it. We may think “money is the root of all evil.” We may believe that “there is never enough money”; or that “money doesn’t grow on trees!” You may have been taught, “You have to work hard for your money.”  You may have been taught, “Let your money work for you. Whatever your beliefs about money, it’s important to understand that money is inherently neutral. It’s a method that allows for the exchange of experiences between people. Money is the same as a barter. I do this for you and you do that for me. I give you this object and you give me that object. You earn your money by creating experiences for others. You spend your money to receive experiences in return.

We spend money on experience. We want to enjoy time with our family and experience new things together so we buy a vacation. When we buy new clothing, we are not just buying fabric to cover our body. We are buying the experience of feeling confident, or sending a signal of status. When we invest our money in buying a house, we are buying a place to call home; we are protecting our safety and security. Even buying food is buying an experience of health and wellbeing, rather than suffering hunger. Nothing you spend money on is really about stuff. The stuff allows you to have some form of experience. Thoreau said, “Wealth is the ability to fully experience life.”

What do you think of money? Consider how you were “programmed” to think about money. Do you have enough? To spare? To share?

If you think you don’t have enough, consider your thoughts. Remember that a belief is just a thought you think over and over. You can begin now to re-program yourself to have a different attitude about money. You can believe that you deserve to live a life of abundance. You may be harboring subconscious fears about not having enough. Do not focus on fear. You experience whatever it is you focus upon. Let go of doubt. Norman Vincent Peale tells us, “Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that.”

Since money is a reward you receive for the services you provide, you can understand that the more valuable the services, the more valuable the reward. How can you do whatever you do more effectively? How can you improve the quality of the services you render? Can you increase the quantity of those services? How can you help people in a greater way?

You have within you, every talent, skill, gift and ability to create the life you want. You have been given everything you need to create success. Julia Cameron says, “What we really want to do is what we are really meant to do. When we do what we are meant to do, money comes to us, doors open for us, we feel useful, and the work we do feels like play to us.”

Thinking of ways you can be of greater service to others, helps you earn more money. More money gives you the opportunity to have more choices. More choices means more experiences.

Remember, money is neither good nor bad. It is just a means to an end. How do you want to experience money in your life? Regardless of your past programming, you get to make the choice now.
